Common questions

Who has to pay advance tax?

Every taxpayer — individuals, firms, companies — whose total tax liability for the year (after TDS) is ₹10,000 or more must pay advance tax. Salaried employees typically don't need to because their tax is deducted at source, but they should check if they have other income (interest, rent, capital gains, business/professional income).

What are the four instalment dates?

For all taxpayers except those under Section 44AD/44ADA (presumptive): 15 June (15%), 15 September (45% cumulative), 15 December (75% cumulative) and 15 March (100%). Presumptive-income taxpayers pay 100% by 15 March.

What happens if I miss an instalment?

Section 234C charges 1% per month simple interest on the shortfall for 3 months (for the first three instalments) and 1 month for the March instalment. Section 234B charges 1% per month from April on any shortfall carried into the assessment year.

Do I add cess and surcharge to the instalment?

Yes. Advance tax instalments are computed on the estimated tax liability including 4% cess and any applicable surcharge. This calculator applies both automatically once you enter total estimated tax.

Can I revise my estimate mid-year?

Yes, and you should. Advance tax is based on your best estimate at each due date. If income turns out higher than expected, top up the next instalment; if lower, reduce the next one.
