Old vs new regime — quick summary
From FY 2024-25 the new tax regime is the default. It offers slabs starting at ₹4 lakh, standard deduction of ₹75,000 for salaried taxpayers, and a full 87A rebate up to ₹12 lakh taxable income (with marginal relief just above it). It disallows most other deductions — 80C, HRA, LTA, home loan interest on self-occupied property, 80D, and so on.
The old regime keeps the higher slab structure (5%, 20%, 30%) starting at ₹2.5 lakh but allows every deduction you can claim. It typically wins when your total deductions exceed ~₹3.75 lakh. Above that, the new regime almost always produces a lower tax liability.
Common questions
Which regime should I choose — old or new?
The new regime (FY 2024-25 onwards) offers lower slab rates but disallows most deductions like 80C, HRA, LTA, and home loan interest (self-occupied). The old regime keeps higher slab rates but allows all deductions. As a rule of thumb: if your total 80C + HRA + home loan + other deductions exceed roughly ₹3.75 lakh, the old regime usually wins. Below that, the new regime is often better.
What is the standard deduction in FY 2025-26?
Salaried taxpayers and pensioners get a ₹75,000 standard deduction under the new regime and ₹50,000 under the old regime. It is applied automatically — no proof is required.
Is the ₹87A rebate still available?
Yes. Under the new regime (FY 2025-26), taxable income up to ₹12 lakh gets a full rebate (zero tax), with marginal relief for incomes just above ₹12 lakh. Under the old regime, the rebate applies up to ₹5 lakh. This calculator applies the correct rebate for each regime automatically.
Does this include cess?
Yes. Health and Education Cess at 4% is added on top of income tax and surcharge (where applicable) in both regimes.
Does this calculator handle surcharge?
Yes — 10% above ₹50 lakh, 15% above ₹1 crore, 25% above ₹2 crore. Under the new regime, the maximum surcharge is capped at 25% (37% cap removed from FY 2023-24).
