Udyam Registration: How to Register Your MSME in 2026

Udyam Registration is a free, online process for Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in India, replacing the old Udyog Aadhaar Memorandum (UAM). It offers a single-window registration based on self-declaration, requiring only an Aadhaar number. This streamlined system, effective from July 1, 2020, aims to simplify classification and enable MSMEs to access various government benefits and schemes easily.

What is Udyam Registration and why is it important for my business?

Udyam Registration is the official process for classifying and registering your enterprise as a Micro, Small, or Medium Enterprise (MSME) with the Ministry of MSME, Government of India. It is important because it provides statutory recognition to your business, enabling access to a wide array of government schemes, subsidies, and incentives designed to support MSMEs. Without this registration, your business cannot avail the benefits specifically earmarked for MSMEs.

The registration process is entirely online, paperless, and free of cost, accessible through the official Udyam Registration portal. This initiative aims to reduce the compliance burden on businesses and foster a more conducive environment for their growth.

How has the MSME classification changed under Udyam Registration?

The MSME classification under Udyam Registration is now based on a composite criterion of investment in plant and machinery or equipment and turnover, a significant departure from the previous system that primarily considered investment. This revised classification, effective from July 1, 2020, aims to include a broader range of businesses, especially those in the services sector, under the MSME umbrella.

The new criteria are as follows:

CategoryInvestment in Plant & Machinery/EquipmentTurnover
MicroNot more than ₹1 CroreNot more than ₹5 Crore
SmallNot more than ₹10 CroreNot more than ₹50 Crore
MediumNot more than ₹50 CroreNot more than ₹250 Crore
  • Investment Calculation: The investment in plant and machinery or equipment will be linked to the Income Tax Return (ITR) of the previous year. For new enterprises without a prior ITR, the investment will be based on the self-declaration of the promoter.
  • Turnover Calculation: Turnover will also be linked to the GSTIN and ITR of the enterprise. Exports of goods or services or both will be excluded while calculating the turnover for any classification.
  • Composite Criteria: If an enterprise crosses the ceiling limits specified for its present category in either of the two criteria (investment or turnover), it will cease to be in that category and be placed in the next higher category. No enterprise shall be placed in the lower category unless it goes below the ceiling limits for its present category in both criteria.

This revised classification is outlined in the Notification S.O. 2119(E) dated June 26, 2020, issued by the Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises.

Is Udyam Registration really free and entirely online?

Yes, Udyam Registration is completely free of cost and the entire process is online, accessible through the official government portal. The Ministry of MSME has explicitly stated that there are no fees for filing Udyam Registration, and no person or entity is authorised to charge any fee for this service.

The online portal, udyamregistration.gov.in, is designed for self-declaration, meaning you can complete the registration yourself without needing intermediaries. The process is Aadhaar-based and requires minimal documentation, making it quick and efficient. This ensures that even small entrepreneurs with limited resources can easily register their businesses and avail the associated benefits.

How does PAN and GSTIN linkage simplify Udyam Registration?

The Udyam Registration process is significantly simplified by its mandatory linkage with your Permanent Account Number (PAN) and Goods and Services Tax Identification Number (GSTIN). This integration allows the system to automatically fetch crucial data regarding your enterprise's investment and turnover directly from government databases.

For enterprises registered under GST, the GSTIN is mandatory. The system uses this to verify turnover data. Similarly, the PAN is essential for all enterprises, as it is linked to income tax returns, which provide investment details. This automatic data retrieval eliminates the need for manual submission of financial statements or complex calculations, reducing errors and speeding up the registration process. It also ensures data authenticity and prevents fraudulent registrations. As per the Notification S.O. 2119(E) dated June 26, 2020, "The PAN of the enterprise and GSTIN, wherever applicable, are mandatory for Udyam Registration."

What is Udyam Assist and how does it help informal micro-enterprises?

Udyam Assist is a new facility introduced by the Ministry of MSME to extend the benefits of Udyam Registration to informal micro-enterprises that may not have a PAN or GSTIN. Many small, unorganised businesses, particularly in rural areas, operate without formal registrations, making it difficult for them to access government support.

Through Udyam Assist, these informal micro-enterprises can obtain a Udyam Registration Number (URN) with the help of designated agencies, such as Common Service Centres (CSCs) or District Industries Centres (DICs). These agencies will facilitate the registration process for entrepreneurs who may not have the digital literacy or the required documents like PAN or GSTIN. This initiative aims to formalise a significant portion of the informal economy, bringing them into the fold of government support and enabling them to grow. The details of this initiative are outlined in the Office Memorandum F. No. 1(4)/2021-P&G/Policy dated 12.01.2023.

What are the key benefits after completing Udyam Registration?

Upon successful Udyam Registration, your enterprise gains access to a multitude of benefits and support mechanisms provided by the government. These benefits are crucial for the growth and sustainability of MSMEs in India.

Some of the key benefits include:

  • Priority Sector Lending: MSMEs are eligible for priority sector lending from banks, often at lower interest rates and with easier terms.
  • Collateral-Free Loans: Access to collateral-free loans from banks under the Credit Guarantee Fund Trust for Micro and Small Enterprises (CGTMSE) scheme.
  • Government Tenders: Preference in government tenders and public procurement policies, with reservations for MSME products and services.
  • Tax Benefits: Various tax exemptions and rebates, including excise duty exemption and reduced income tax rates for certain MSMEs.
  • Reduced Patent and Trademark Fees: Significant reduction in fees for filing patents and trademarks, encouraging innovation.
  • Protection Against Delayed Payments: The MSME Development Act, 2006, provides a mechanism for timely payments to MSMEs and a redressal system for delayed payments. Sec. 15 of the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises Development Act, 2006, states, "Where any supplier supplies any goods or renders any services to any buyer, the buyer shall make payment therefor on or before the date agreed upon between him and the supplier in writing or, where there is no agreement in this regard, before the appointed day."
  • Access to Government Schemes: Eligibility for various government schemes promoting technology upgradation, marketing assistance, skill development, and infrastructure development.
  • International Trade Fairs: Assistance for participation in international trade fairs and exhibitions.
  • Concessions in Electricity Bills: Some states offer concessions on electricity bills for registered MSMEs.

These benefits collectively create a supportive ecosystem for MSMEs, fostering their competitiveness and contributing to economic growth.

Frequently asked questions

Who is eligible for Udyam Registration?

Any enterprise that falls under the definition of Micro, Small, or Medium as per the revised criteria of investment and turnover is eligible for Udyam Registration. This includes manufacturing and service enterprises. The registration is open to all types of business entities, including proprietorships, Hindu Undivided Families (HUFs), partnerships, cooperative societies, trusts, and companies.

Is Udyam Registration mandatory for all MSMEs?

While Udyam Registration is not legally mandatory in the sense of a prerequisite to start a business, it is highly recommended. Without Udyam Registration, an enterprise cannot avail the various benefits, schemes, and incentives provided by the Central and State Governments specifically for MSMEs. Therefore, to access government support, it is practically essential.

What documents are required for Udyam Registration?

For Udyam Registration, the primary document required is your Aadhaar number. For proprietorships, the Aadhaar number of the proprietor is needed. For partnership firms, the Aadhaar of the managing partner, and for companies or LLPs, the Aadhaar of an authorised signatory. PAN and GSTIN are also mandatory for most enterprises, as the system fetches investment and turnover data from these. No other documents like balance sheets or proof of investment are typically required as the process is self-declaration based and linked to government databases.

Can an enterprise have more than one Udyam Registration?

No, an enterprise can only have one Udyam Registration. The Ministry of MSME's guidelines clearly state that "Any number of activities including manufacturing or service or both may be specified or added in one Udyam Registration." This means that even if your business engages in multiple activities, they should all be covered under a single Udyam Registration.

How do I update my Udyam Registration details?

You can update your Udyam Registration details, such as investment, turnover, or business activities, online through the official Udyam Registration portal. The system automatically updates investment and turnover details based on your latest ITR and GSTIN data. For other changes, you can log in using your Udyam Registration Number and the OTP received on your registered mobile number.

What is the validity of Udyam Registration?

Udyam Registration has lifetime validity. There is no expiry date for the registration certificate. However, it is crucial for enterprises to regularly update their details, especially investment and turnover, on the portal to ensure their classification remains accurate and they continue to be eligible for MSME benefits. The system is designed to automatically update these figures based on ITR and GSTIN data.
