Import Export Code (IEC) Registration
The Import Export Code (IEC) is a mandatory 10-digit number for businesses importing or exporting from India. This guide explains the online application process.
Import Export Code (IEC) Registration: Your Guide for 2026
Short answer: The Import Export Code (IEC) is a mandatory 10-digit identification number issued by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) for any business or individual undertaking the import or export of goods and services from India. It is based on your Permanent Account Number (PAN) and has lifetime validity, though it requires an annual electronic update to remain active. Without an IEC, you cannot clear customs, send shipments, or receive payments from overseas.
What is an Import Export Code (IEC)?
An IEC is the primary business identification number essential for international trade. It is a unique 10-digit code required by any person or entity to import goods into India or export goods out of India. No import or export can be made by any person without an IEC unless they are specifically exempted. The IEC is issued by the DGFT, a government body under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry. Once issued, it is valid for the lifetime of the entity, provided the annual verification is completed.
Who needs to obtain an IEC?
Any person or business entity intending to start an import-export business in India must obtain an IEC. This includes proprietorships, partnerships, LLPs, private limited companies, and individuals. Banks require the IEC to facilitate international fund transfers for trade purposes. Similarly, customs authorities will not clear shipments without a valid IEC. Even service providers exporting services can obtain an IEC to avail benefits under the Foreign Trade Policy, such as those related to a Letter of Undertaking (LUT) for GST.
What documents are required for IEC registration?
You must have your PAN, proof of address, and proof of a bank account in the name of the business to apply. The exact documents depend on your business structure. The entire application process is online, and you will need to upload scanned copies of these documents.
Here is a checklist of the typical documents required:
| Document | Proprietorship | Partnership Firm | LLP / Company |
|---|---|---|---|
| Identity Proof | PAN Card of Proprietor | PAN Card of Firm | PAN Card of Company/LLP |
| Address Proof | Aadhaar/Voter ID/Passport | Aadhaar/Voter ID/Passport of Managing Partner | Aadhaar/Voter ID/Passport of Director/Designated Partner |

| Incorporation Proof | Not Applicable | Partnership Deed | Certificate of Incorporation / LLP Agreement |
| Authorisation | Not Applicable | Not Applicable | Board Resolution / Authorisation Letter |
How do you apply for an IEC online?
The application is filed electronically on the official DGFT portal by following a clear, step-by-step process. Before you begin, ensure you have all documents scanned and ready for upload.
- Visit the DGFT Website: Navigate to the official DGFT portal (dgft.gov.in).
- Register: Create a user profile on the portal using your PAN, email ID, and mobile number. Validate the OTPs received.
- Apply for IEC: Once registered, log in and navigate to the 'Services' tab and select 'Apply for IEC'.
- Fill the Application Form: You will be directed to an online form, Application Number ANF-2A. Fill in all details of the business entity, its partners/directors, and bank information.
- Upload Documents: Upload the required documents as per the checklist above.
- Pay the Fee: Pay the prescribed application fee (currently ₹500) through the online payment gateway.
- Submit and Verify: Submit the application. The system will process the details, and upon successful verification, the e-IEC will be generated and sent to your registered email address. You can also download it from the DGFT portal.
Is there an annual renewal or compliance for an IEC?
Yes, while the IEC itself does not expire, it is mandatory to update and verify your IEC details electronically every financial year. This must be done on the DGFT portal between April and June. If there are no changes to your details, you just need to confirm them. If you fail to perform this annual verification, your IEC will be deactivated. A deactivated IEC can be reactivated after completing the update process, which may involve paying a fee.
When is an IEC not required?
An IEC is not mandatory in all situations. The government provides exemptions for certain categories of importers and exporters to facilitate small-scale or non-commercial transactions.
An IEC is generally not required for:
- Import or export of goods for personal use, which are not connected with trade or business.
- Import or export by government ministries and departments, and certain notified charitable institutions.
- Transactions covered under specific bilateral agreements.
- Persons exporting or importing goods from/to Nepal and Myanmar through Indo-Myanmar border areas, provided the CIF value of a single consignment does not exceed ₹25,000.
Worked example
Let's consider 'Bengaluru Handlooms Pvt. Ltd.', a new company looking to export locally sourced silk sarees to the United States.
- Objective: The company needs an IEC to legally export its products and receive payments from its US-based buyers.
- Document Preparation: The director collects the following documents:
- Company's PAN card.
- Certificate of Incorporation issued by the Registrar of Companies.
- PAN and Aadhaar cards of the authorised director.
- Board Resolution authorising one director to apply for the IEC.
- A cancelled cheque from the company's current account with a Bengaluru bank branch.
- The rental agreement for their office in Jayanagar, Bengaluru.
- Application Process:
- The director registers on the DGFT portal using her PAN.
- She logs in and starts the IEC application (Form ANF-2A).
- She fills in the company's details, director information, and bank account number.
- She uploads scanned copies of all the prepared documents.
- She pays the application fee of ₹500 online.
- Issuance: After submission, the application is processed automatically. Within a few hours, the e-IEC certificate is generated with the company's 10-digit IEC number. It is emailed to the company's registered email ID.
- Next Step: The company can now use this IEC for all its export shipments. The director sets a calendar reminder for next year's April-June window to complete the mandatory annual IEC update.
Common mistakes
- Forgetting Annual Updates: The most common error is failing to update the IEC between April and June each year, which leads to deactivation and can halt shipments.
- Incorrect Bank Details: Providing a savings account instead of a business current account, or entering incorrect account details, can cause issues with foreign remittance and DGFT verification.
- Address Mismatch: The address on the proof of business (e.g., rent agreement) must match the address provided in the application form.
- Delaying Application: Waiting until your first consignment is ready to ship or has arrived at the port can lead to costly delays, demurrage charges, and potential cancellation of orders.
- Assuming No IEC for Service Exports: While not always mandatory for clearing customs, an IEC is required to claim benefits under the Foreign Trade Policy or for certain bank compliances for service exporters.

Frequently asked questions
How long does it take to get an IEC?
If all your documents are in order, the e-IEC is typically generated and issued within 1-3 working days after you submit the online application and payment.
Can one person have multiple IECs?
No. An IEC is linked to a PAN. One PAN cardholder (whether an individual or a company) can only have one IEC. If you have multiple businesses under different PANs, you can obtain a separate IEC for each.
What is the government fee for IEC registration?
The current government fee for a new IEC application is ₹500. This is subject to change as per notifications from the DGFT. There may be additional fees for modifications or reactivation of a deactivated IEC.
Do I need a Digital Signature Certificate (DSC) for IEC?
While the initial application can sometimes be done with Aadhaar e-sign, a Digital Signature Certificate (DSC) is essential for many other activities on the DGFT portal, including certain updates, license applications, and linking the IEC. It is highly recommended to have a Class 3 DSC.
My IEC is deactivated. What should I do?
To reactivate your IEC, you must log in to the DGFT portal, complete the annual update process by verifying or modifying your details, and submit the form. The IEC will be reactivated, allowing you to resume your import/export activities.
